What is ADSL?
ADSL is a way in which data can be sent down
your phone line to your computer. The data is sent at such a
high pitch that only the computer can hear it. This means that
you can continue to use the telephone line for normal calls and talk to your mother WHILST surfing
the Internet!!
ADSL gives you 'always on' connection to the
Internet similar to the way in which a computer, at the office, logs
on to the network when the PC is powered ON first thing in the
morning and logs off when the PC is turned OFF at night. Think
of it as a network socket in your house which is connected directly
to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), no diallup is required, no call charges are incurred, it is
'always on'!
Pros:
always
on,
much faster
than ISDN upto
2MB/s.
no
call charges for
surfing.
Fixed IP address: you can host your
own webserver at
home!
Cons:
can only be
used for
surfing.
£40 per
MONTH.
Not
guaranteed bandwidth (upto 2MB/s but varies pending
on network
traffic)
Fixed IP
address: you can be hacked easier than a dialup account (see fixed

distance:

it is very difficult to change
ISP)
No additional phone lines or numbers are
provided, if you need to send a fax WHILST you are on the phone then
you should have got
ISDN/Homehighway.
Scenario 1: You have a single BT
telephone line and are contemplating ADSL.
1 - You purchase ADSL from the ISP (not from
BT directly, however BT run an ISP called Broadnet). There are
currently 2 versions available, single user and
5 user.
2 - The ISP will get BT to fit a box by your current
telephone socket.
If you have purchased the Single user
version the box will have a USB
lead .
If you purchased the 5 user version, they will provide a standard
10baseT hub.
Does this mean
the death of ISDN/2 (and Homehighway)?
No! Some SOHO customers need additional telephone lines and
numbers for a dedicated fax line. Other customers need a
guaranteed 128K bandwidth which can not be done with ADSL.
What additional
equipment could the customer require?
- If the customers computer does not have a USB port he will need
a USB PCI card
to provide 2 x USB ports.<and maybe USB hubs
to plug their USB camera into!>
- If the customer bought the 5 user version, he will require
several 10 or 10/100Mb/s network cards <plus any
additional standard Ethernet related products, such as
printservers!>
