INTERNET ISP MODEM FAQ
So you've installed your modem correctly as discribed in Spiders Modem Installation Guide for Beginners but you are still unable to surf..
You need to establish the following..
1 - can my modem speak to my Internet Service Providers (ISP) modem?
2 - are my login details correct.
3 - Is TCPIP networking loaded correctly.
4 - Is DNS working correctly
We will explain how to check these, these have to be performed and checked in this logical order so do NOT jump sections.
1 - can my modem speak to my Internet Service Providers (ISP) modem?
To test this you will need to load hyperterminal and dial your ISP. This is done by:
win95:start >> programs >> accessories >> HyperTerminal >> hypertrm.exe
win98:start >> programs >> accessories >> comms >> Hyperterm >> hyperterm.exe
for connection name type TEST <next>
for telephone number type your ISPs modem number e.g. 08453530000 <next>
then press DIAL.
You should hear the following:
1a) dialtone
1b) dtmf (the tones the modem makes to represent the digits dialled)
1c) handshaking (a gravelly white noise sound)
1d) see the word CONNECT.
If you see the words connect, then your modem CAN speak to your ISP's modem <proceed to next section>
if you did not hear a dialtone, then you need to follow:
Spiders Modem Installation Guide for Beginners and start again from the top.
2 - are my login details correct.
Dial your ISP using DialUpNetworking..
..once have the doublePC icon on the right of your task bar means that you have the correct drivers/telno/username/password!.
3 - Is TCPIP networking loaded correctly.
To test TCP/IP, open an MSDOS prompt and type 'ping 194.129.192.6', this will send a message to 194.129.192.6, if all is well you should get 4 replies.
If you get 'request timeout' then either:
- you are not logged in to your isp.
- tcp/ip is corrupt or faulty
4 - Is DNS working correctly
once you are able to ping correctly, you can then test your DNS. To test DNS, open a MSDOS prompt and type 'ping www.euro-tech.co.uk', if you get 4 replies, then load INTERNET EXPLORER and surf way.
If you get 'request timeout' then your DNS setting is incorrect, goto CONTROLPANEL>>NETWORK>>TCPIP>>DNS and change primary DNS to the DNS number given to you by your ISP. The DNS for Freeserve for example is: 194.152.64.35
